What to wear for Your Myrtle Beach Family Session: Telling Your Story

Planning  what to wear for your family photography session is more than just choosing clothes—it’s about telling your family’s story. This sounds very stressful for those who do not consider themselves the creative type. Each person is a character, and when the color pieces come together harmoniously, it represents your family's journey. As a Myrtle Beach photographer who loves working with families, I want to help make this less daunting.

So…How Should You Dress for Our Family Session?

Your outfit choices should balance comfort, coordination, and the storytelling element.  Don't overthink it because less is more.

  • Movement Adds Drama: Dresses with flow are IDEAL because they give you a place to put your hands when you hold your dress. They add an element of elegance, especially in windy beach settings or nature trails. That little sway in your skirt looks incredible as you walk down the sandy golden sunset, I promise.

  • Layers Add Depth: Incorporate layers such as button up shirts, sweaters, or lightweight jackets to draw the eye.

  • PLEASE Coordinate…Don't Match: Instead of matching outfits, aim for complementary colors.

What Color Scheme (funny word) is best for Family Photos?

Picking colors for your family photos depends on the setting and time of day. Myrtle Beach offers different backdrops, green parks to golden sunsets sandy beaches.

  • Nature  Trails and Parks: Opt for earthy tones such as olive green, beige, mustard, or rust. These colors blend beautifully with the woodsy vibe of your surroundings.

  • Sunrise / Sunset on the Beach: Soft, muted colors! Blush pink, baby blue, and lavender work well for a dreamy aesthetic. Muted tones such as navy, sand, and light gray are classic feels.

  • Avoid overly bright colors as they can clash with the soft, neutral tones of the sand and sky. Instead, go for deeper or muted shades.

  • Cream is a popular choice for beach photos, but consider adding soft colors like mint, coral, or light yellow to add dimension.

  • Solids work better than patterns to keep the focus on your family’s connection.

Additional Tips for Outfit Planning:

  • Skip Bright : Neon shades and bright (especially red) can distract from the overall image

  • Avoid White: Choose shades of tan or creamy colors instead of  bright white

  • Embrace Deeper: Burgundy, forest green, and navy for a more formal or elegant look.

  • Don’t sleep on Warm : Taupe, dusty rose, or charcoal for a softer and inviting feel.
